THE SUMMER EFFECT
ASK AGAIN.
One more question. One more conversation. One more chance to connect.
The Girl Behind the Summer Effect
Summer is 14 years old. She’s a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, a niece, and a friend. She’s a teenager with a personality all her own, people who love her, and a whole life ahead of her.
And like so many teenagers, there were things happening beneath the surface that the people who loved her didn’t fully understand.
In October 2026, Summer attempted to take her own life.
Our family was suddenly facing something we never imagined. The ordinary worries of everyday life were replaced by hospital rooms, difficult conversations, and questions nobody could answer.
Summer survived, but the lack of oxygen to her brain caused a serious injury. Today, she faces a long and uncertain road to recovery.
We share this not because Summer’s story is easy to tell. It isn’t. And not because we have all the answers. We don’t.
We share it because we know our family isn’t the only one that has struggled to recognize when someone they love is hurting.
Sometimes we ask, “Are you okay?” and accept the first answer.
Sometimes we notice a change but don’t know what to say.
Sometimes we assume that if something is really wrong, the people closest to us will tell us.
But struggling doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.
That’s why we created The Summer Effect.
It’s a reminder to pay attention. To make room for difficult conversations. To listen without judgment. And when something doesn’t feel right, to ask again.
Not because one more question guarantees a different outcome, but because every person deserves to know someone is willing to listen.
One more question. One more conversation. One more chance to connect.
Our Mission
We believe meaningful conversations can make a difference.
The Summer Effect was created to encourage people to look beyond the surface, listen without judgment, and make space for honest conversations about mental health.
Sometimes the people who are struggling are the ones we least expect. Sometimes they don’t have the words to explain what they’re feeling. And sometimes they need someone willing to ask again.
Our mission is to turn Summer’s story into greater awareness, stronger connections, and a reminder that no one should have to face their struggles alone.
ASK AGAIN.
One more question. One more conversation. One more chance to connect.
What Does It Mean to Ask Again?
Sometimes the people who need us most are the ones who say they’re fine.
Asking again doesn’t mean pushing someone to talk before they’re ready. It means paying attention, creating a safe space, and reminding them that they don’t have to face everything alone.
It starts with three simple things.
NOTICE.
Sometimes the signs are subtle. Someone becomes quieter, withdraws from friends, seems unusually overwhelmed, or simply doesn’t seem like themselves.
You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong to recognize that something may have changed.
ASK.
“Are you okay?” is a good place to start.
But sometimes the first answer is “I’m fine,” even when things aren’t fine.
It’s okay to gently ask again.
“I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed like yourself lately. I’m here if you want to talk.”
LISTEN.
You don’t need the perfect words or an immediate solution.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is listen without judgment, resist the urge to minimize someone’s feelings, and remind them that they matter.
When Someone Needs More Than a Conversation
Sometimes being there for someone means recognizing that they need more support than we can provide on our own.
If someone tells you they’re struggling, take them seriously. Listen without judgment. Let them know they matter and that they don’t have to figure everything out alone.
You don’t need to be a mental health professional to help someone take the next step. You can offer to sit with them while they make a call, help them find a counselor, or connect them with someone they trust.
If you’re concerned someone may be thinking about suicide, it’s okay to ask directly. Asking about suicide does not put the idea in someone’s head. It can open the door to an important conversation.
If someone is in immediate danger, stay with them if it’s safe to do so, help keep them away from anything they could use to hurt themselves, and call 911 or seek emergency medical care.
Supporting someone doesn’t mean having all the answers. Sometimes it means helping them find the people who do.
Need Someone to Talk to?
CALL OR TEXT 988
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You don’t have to be experiencing suicidal thoughts to reach out. You can also contact 988 if you’re worried about someone you care about.
You don’t have to face a difficult moment alone.
Wear the Message. Start the Conversation.
Sometimes a simple message can start a conversation we didn’t know someone needed.
The Summer Effect was created to turn awareness into action. Every shirt, sweatshirt, tumbler, and accessory is an opportunity to share a message that matters.
When someone sees ASK AGAIN., we hope they’ll be curious enough to ask what it means. And when you share the story behind those two words, you become part of something bigger than a purchase.
You become part of a reminder that checking in matters, listening matters, and nobody should have to struggle alone.
Wear it. Share it. Start the conversation.
Giving Back. Creating Change.
The Summer Effect began with one family’s experience, but our hope is that its impact will reach far beyond our own.
We believe awareness matters. Conversations matter. And so does making sure people have access to support when they need it.
That’s why giving back is part of our mission.
As The Summer Effect grows, our goal is to support organizations working in suicide prevention, mental health awareness, and crisis intervention through contributions from merchandise sales.
We’re starting small, but we’re starting with purpose.
Every conversation started, every message shared, and every effort to support someone who is struggling is part of what we hope The Summer Effect will become.
Because the impact of one conversation can reach further than we may ever know.
